Funeral Celebrant FAQs – Your Questions Answered
Arranging a funeral, memorial or celebration of life can bring many questions, particularly if you have never had to organise a service before. I am here to make the process as simple and supportive as possible. As an independent funeral celebrant based in Southport, I work with families across Merseyside, Lancashire, Cheshire and surrounding areas to create personal and meaningful ceremonies that truly reflect the person being remembered.
What does a funeral celebrant do?
A funeral celebrant works with you and your family to create and lead a funeral service that reflects the life, personality, values and wishes of the person who has died. I will spend time getting to know about your loved one, listening to your memories and helping you decide what you would like included in the service. This can include a personal tribute or eulogy, music, readings, poems, moments of reflection and contributions from family and friends. My role is to guide and support you throughout the process and create a service that feels personal, meaningful and right for your family.
What is the difference between a funeral celebrant and a humanist celebrant?
An independent funeral celebrant can create a ceremony that includes religious, spiritual or non-religious elements, depending entirely on the wishes and beliefs of the person and their family. A humanist funeral is generally non-religious. As an independent celebrant, I am happy to include prayers, hymns, blessings or other religious elements if they are meaningful to you. Equally, I can create a completely non-religious ceremony. There is no set format. The service is created around the individual and what feels right for those remembering them.
How do I choose the right funeral celebrant?
Choosing a funeral celebrant is a very personal decision. You should feel comfortable talking openly with them and confident that they will listen to you and understand how you would like your loved one to be remembered. It can be helpful to consider their experience, qualifications and testimonials, but also how you feel when you first speak to them. You are trusting someone with an incredibly important moment for your family, so finding a celebrant who feels right for you matters.
What happens when we meet to arrange the funeral?
Our meeting gives me the opportunity to learn about your loved one and gives you the time and space to tell me about the person behind the name. We can talk about their life, personality, family, friendships, achievements, favourite memories, music and the little things that made them who they were. We will also discuss how you would like the service to feel, along with music, readings, poems, speakers and any particular wishes you may have. You do not need to have everything decided before we meet. I will guide you through the process and help you create a ceremony that feels right.
What if we don't know what we want the funeral service to include?
Please don't worry if you don't know where to begin. For many families, arranging a funeral is something they have never had to do before. I will talk you through the different options and help you decide what feels appropriate for your loved one and your family. Sometimes it is the smallest details – a favourite song, a funny story, a particular saying or a treasured memory – that make a service feel truly personal.
Can the funeral service be personalised?
Absolutely. A celebrant-led funeral gives you the opportunity to create a service that genuinely reflects the individual rather than following a fixed format. We can incorporate their personality, interests, beliefs, achievements, favourite music, stories, memories and the people who were important to them. Every person's life is different, so every ceremony I create is different too. Together, we can create something that feels appropriate, personal and meaningful.
Can we choose our own music, poems and readings?
Yes. Choosing music, poems and readings that meant something to your loved one can make a funeral incredibly personal. You may already know exactly what you would like to include, or I can help you consider suitable choices if you are unsure where to begin. Family members and friends can also choose or contribute readings, poems and music if they wish.
Can we include prayers, hymns or religious elements?
Yes. A celebrant-led funeral does not have to be non-religious. If a particular prayer, hymn, blessing or religious tradition was important to your loved one or your family, it can be incorporated into the service. Equally, the ceremony can be entirely non-religious. The most important thing is that the service reflects the person you are remembering and feels appropriate to the people closest to them.
Can family and friends take part in the ceremony?
Of course. Family members and friends are very welcome to contribute to the ceremony if they would like to. They may wish to read a poem, share a memory, deliver part of the tribute or choose a special piece of music. If someone would like to participate but is worried that they may find speaking too difficult or emotional on the day, we can discuss other ways of including their words or contribution.
Who writes the eulogy or funeral tribute?
I can write and deliver a personal tribute to your loved one using the memories, stories and information that you and your family share with me. Some families prefer to write their own tribute or ask a family member or friend to speak, and that is absolutely fine too. We can work together to decide what feels most comfortable. My aim is to ensure the tribute feels authentic and captures their character, relationships, important moments and the memories they leave behind.
Can you conduct a burial or graveside service?
Yes. I can lead personal burial and graveside ceremonies as well as cremation services. A graveside ceremony can include a tribute, readings, poetry, prayers, music where appropriate, or quiet moments of reflection according to your family's wishes. I can work alongside you and your funeral director to create a ceremony that is appropriate for the setting and the person you are saying goodbye to.
What is a Celebration of Life?
A Celebration of Life is a ceremony focused on remembering and celebrating someone's life, personality, relationships and the memories they leave behind. It can be held as part of funeral arrangements or separately at a later date. A Celebration of Life can be as traditional or informal as you wish and may include favourite music, photographs, stories, readings, poems and contributions from family and friends. There is no single way that it has to be done. The ceremony can be created around the person being remembered and the wishes of those closest to them.
Can you conduct a memorial service or Celebration of Life?
Yes. I create and lead memorial services and Celebrations of Life as well as funeral ceremonies. A memorial can be held separately from the funeral, perhaps weeks or months later, and gives family and friends another opportunity to come together and remember someone's life. It can be as formal or informal as you wish and can include music, photographs, stories, readings, tributes and contributions from the people who knew them best.
Can you lead a ceremony for the scattering or interment of ashes?
Yes. The scattering or interment of ashes can be marked with a personal ceremony created especially for your family. This might include carefully chosen words, a poem, music, prayers, memories, a short tribute or a moment of quiet reflection. It can be a very intimate and meaningful way for family and friends to come together, remember someone special and mark the final resting place of their ashes.
Can we arrange a ceremony if there wasn't a traditional funeral?
Yes. Some families choose a direct cremation without a funeral service and then arrange a memorial or Celebration of Life separately. This gives you the freedom to bring family and friends together at a time and place that feels right for you. I can work with you to create a personal ceremony to remember and celebrate your loved one's life, whether this takes place shortly after their death or at a later date.
How much does a funeral celebrant cost?
My fee will depend on the type of ceremony required and any individual arrangements involved. I will always explain my fee clearly before you make a commitment. My service includes the time spent getting to know you and your family, preparing and writing the ceremony, creating the personal tribute, liaising with your funeral director where required and conducting the service on the day. Please contact me to discuss your requirements and my current fee.
How far in advance should we contact a funeral celebrant?
It is helpful to make contact as soon as you know the proposed date, time and location of the funeral or ceremony. Funeral arrangements can sometimes happen within a relatively short period, so getting in touch early allows us to confirm availability and arrange a convenient time to talk. If I am available, we can then begin creating the ceremony together.
Do we contact you directly or through our funeral director?
Either is absolutely fine. Your funeral director can contact me on your behalf, or you are very welcome to contact me directly if you would like to discuss a funeral, memorial, Celebration of Life or ashes ceremony. If you have already appointed a funeral director, I can liaise with them as necessary regarding the arrangements for the service.
Which areas do you cover?
I am a funeral celebrant based in Liverpool, Wirral, Southport, Merseyside, and work with families throughout Southport and the surrounding areas. I cover areas including Formby, Ormskirk and the wider Merseyside, Lancashire and Cheshire areas. If you are unsure whether I can travel to your location, please get in touch. I will be happy to discuss your requirements with you.
How do I get in touch?
You are very welcome to contact me directly to discuss a funeral, memorial service, Celebration of Life, burial or ashes ceremony. I understand that making the first call can sometimes feel difficult, so there is no obligation to have everything decided before you contact me. We can simply have an initial conversation about what you need, answer any questions you may have and take things from there. Please use my Contact page to get in touch and I will respond as soon as I can.
